Elementary progress report offers more details

A three-year project is about to become reality when the first academic standards based elementary progress report is issued in early December. The new elementary progress report is based on standards set by the state of Ohio. For example, on the sample reading portion of the progress report (see samples posted), the state reading standards are in bold.

Students in grades K-3 will track progress through the designations AC, PR and LP, outlined in the box at the bottom of the page. Fourth and fifth grade students will receive the same designations and will continue to be assigned a letter grade.

Wyandot Elementary Principal John Pfeiffer, speaking on behalf of the elementary principals team that developed the new progress report, cautioned parents not to work too hard to correlated the AC, PR and LP designations with traditional A, B, C, D and F grades. “ We believe you can definitely get a PR and still earn an A,” Pfeiffer said. “Progress on any standard is important.”

If a standards block is left blank, the particular standard was not assessed during the trimester. Parent information meetings on the new progress report were conducted at all elementary schools.

“We are hopeful this gives parents a lot more information about what is being taught and what their students are learning,” Pfeiffer said.

Because the progress report contains much more detail than the previous report, it will only be issued three times each year The progress report will be issued in December, March and June. All students in grades 1-5 receive an interim report in October. Students who may be struggling in one subject or another will receive interim reports in January and April.

“We believe this is a more powerful tool for parents,” Pfeiffer said.
