Samples of Standards-Based Report Cards
Westlake City Schools
As our district began the journey of creating a standards-based report card
we studied the professional literature regarding the purpose and scope of
it. In addition, we studied report cards from around the nation in order to
see how other states who were farther along the standards-based education
movement had been reporting to their constituents.
The report card is the single most important communication tool that we
can provide to both parents and the student. We determined, that the report
card was meant to relay student achievement progress to our customers and
that in order to accurately fulfill the objective we needed to take a fundamentally
different approach than that which existed with previous reporting mechanisms.
Our district report card team was comprised of administrators (both central
office and building principals), teachers of all types (regular, special education
and specials subjects) and members of the PTA. We worked for an entire year
at creating something that we are proud of. We believe that it serves as a
testament to the district's commitment to a standards-based education system.
In addition, it has provided the leverage and motivation that we needed in
order to map and pace our curriculum and determine which standards are the
most important. Our teachers have a specific teaching map to help guide their
instruction with students. Rather than focusing on materials or what page
they are supposed to be on in a text, our maps emphasize the standards, benchmarks
and indicators that teachers should be incorporating into their lessons and
classroom instruction.
